4 Ways to Obtain a DND Cave Map

Dungeons and Dragons is a very popular TTRPG that allows players to adventure in fantastic settings they’d never encounter. The setting is essential to gameplay because immersion is crucial to a successful session. Choosing the right setting and the right dungeon map can be the difference between a lousy game and bringing the game to life!

If you are planning to run a D&D campaign in a cave, it helps to have a map to base the cave on. To help you find just the map, you need (and spend just the amount of time and money finding it), we’ve created this small blog to help you learn about the different methods of obtaining a DND cave map and the advantages and disadvantages of each technique. So let’s get into it.

Option 1: Purchase or find a pre-made map

You can find various websites and stores selling pre-made D&D maps. These maps can be a quick and easy way to get a map for your campaign. They often come with different features, such as gridded or ungridded versions, high-resolution images, and printable or physical copies.

However, pre-made maps can also be expensive and may only be suitable for some campaign settings. Additionally, pre-made maps can be challenging to customize, as you are limited to the features that the map creator has included.

I have found a lot of success searching on Pinterest though I have had to tailor my cave encounters to fit the map rather than the other way around. Finding them on Pinterest is generally free, though, so there is that trade-off.

Option 2: Draw your own map

If you are creative and skilled, you can draw your own D&D cave map. Using this method, you can design a map that is ideally suited to your campaign setting and add as much detail and creativity as you want.

However, drawing your own map can take time and effort, especially if you’re not an artist. Additionally, it may take a lot of work to make a visually appealing and functional map.

Option 3: Use a digital map-making tool

Several different digital map-making tools are available, such as Dungeon Scrawl, Incarnate, and Wonderdraft. However, I am particularly fond of Dungeon Alchemist. These tools can create high-quality maps quickly and easily, offering many features and tools to customize your maps.

However, digital map-making tools can be expensive. They can also be hard to learn how to use. Even with all that, you might be unable to make a map that fits your setting, so pick the right tool.

Option 4: Use a random map generator

Several different random map generators are available online, such as Donjon and MapGen. These generators can be used to create maps of any size or complexity, and they can be used to create maps of any setting.

However, random map generators can produce poorly original or creative maps. As a result, you may have to work harder to get a map that only looks a little like what you want.

Ultimately, the best way to obtain a D&D cave map for your campaign will depend on your individual needs and preferences. A pre-made map or a random map generator should do the trick if you need a quick and easy solution. If you want more control, drawing your map or using a digital map-making tool may be better. Obviously, the price has a significant effect on what you choose. Drawing your own map or using a free map generator will be the cheapest option.
